Why are there duplicates in my Snapchat Memories?
Snapchat sometimes stores the same memory twice, so it comes out twice in your export. We skip exact duplicates automatically, and the report in your download says how many there were.
Where duplicates come from
The most common reason is that Snapchat has the same memory saved twice, with the same date, time and place. In the export they look like two different memories with two different file names, even though they’re the same photo.
How we spot them
Once we’ve put the date, place and caption back, two copies of the same memory end up identical, byte for byte. So we keep the first one and skip the rest. That way you don’t get the same photo twice in your download, Google Photos, Google Drive or Dropbox. Your report shows the number skipped as “Exact duplicates skipped”.
We only skip copies that are exactly the same. Two photos taken a second apart are different photos, so you get both.
Duplicates you asked for
Two options add extra files on purpose, so don’t mistake them for duplicates:
- “Also keep copies without captions” adds
_originalfiles next to memories that had a caption. - “Also keep the separate parts” adds
_part1,_part2and so on next to joined videos.
Duplicates in your photo app
If you import the same files twice (say, once from your phone and once from a computer), most photo apps will show them twice. So pick one way of importing and stick to it.
