How to save your Snapchat chat photos and videos

Turn on "Export Chat media" when you ask Snapchat for your data. You get the photos and videos from your chats without the messages, and we can date them and save them next to your Memories.

Step by step

  1. Ask for "Memories and chat media" In Snapchat's "My Data", turn on "Export your Memories", "Export JSON files" and "Export Chat media". Our guide shows where they are.
  2. Tick "Also save my chat photos and videos" When you add your export to BackupMemories, tick that box before you start.
  3. Find them in their own folder They're saved by date in a folder called "Chat media", separate from your Memories.

What Snapchat sends

In the exports we’ve checked, chat photos and videos come in one folder, chat_media, with every file named by the date it was sent. There are no names, no messages and nothing to say which conversation each one came from.

We don’t open your chat history to work that out either (it’s your friends’ messages as much as yours). So chat photos and videos are sorted by date only, not by conversation.

How they’re dated

Each file’s date comes from Snapchat’s file name. Chat media has no location, so the time is set in the time zone you choose before uploading (your device’s, unless you change it).

A thought before you share them

Your chat media includes photos and videos other people sent you. So be a bit careful about where you put them, especially if the backup is somewhere shared, like a family Google account.
