Is Snapchat charging for Memories?
Only if you keep more than 5GB of Memories in Snapchat. Up to 5GB stays free, and above that Snapchat offers paid plans, starting at $1.99 a month in the US for 100GB.
The plans
Snapchat’s help page lists these (prices are for the US).
| Plan | Memories storage | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 5GB | Free |
| Memories-only plan | 100GB | $1.99 a month or $20 a year |
| Snapchat+ | 250GB | Included in Snapchat+ |
| Snapchat Platinum | 5TB | Included in Platinum |
Prices in other countries are different, and Snapchat only publishes the US ones on that page. So if you’re in the UK, India or anywhere else, the app is the place to check.
When it starts
Snapchat announced the plans on 26 September 2025. If you had more than 5GB, you got 12 months of temporary storage for everything above it.
From January 2027, memories that are more than a year old and aren’t part of your oldest 5GB are archived. Snapchat says it’ll warn you in the app before that happens.
What happens if you don’t pay
Nothing gets deleted. Archived memories stay in Memories as thumbnails, but you need to upgrade your storage to open, edit or share them. There’s more on that in is Snapchat deleting Memories?
Can you avoid paying?
Yes, by keeping your memories somewhere else. Snapchat lets you download all of them for free, and the copy is yours to put in Google Photos, on your phone or on a computer. Here’s how to download all your Snapchat Memories at once.
Some people then delete memories in Snapchat to get back under 5GB. If you do, check your copy properly first (open a few old ones and look at the dates), because once they’re gone from Snapchat you can’t get them back from there.
